If you have ever opened the bottom chamber of a grinder and found a layer of fine, golden-green dust, you have already met kief. It is one of the oldest and simplest cannabis concentrates, and it is one of the easiest ways to make a bowl or joint noticeably stronger. This guide explains what kief is, how strong it is, how it differs from hash, the best ways to use it, how to collect your own, how to judge quality, how to store it, and which kief we carry.
Kief at a glance
| What it is | The loose resin glands (trichomes) that fall off dried cannabis flower |
|---|---|
| Other names | Dry sift, sift, and sometimes “pollen” (although it is not actually pollen) |
| Commonly reported strength | Often 40% to 60% THC or more, depending on how clean it is |
| Flavour | Carries the terpenes of the strain it came from |
| Common uses | Sprinkled on a bowl or joint, pressed into hash, made into moon rocks or edibles |
| Who it suits | Anyone who smokes flower and wants a stronger, cheaper boost |
What is kief?
Cannabis flowers are covered in tiny, sticky, mushroom-shaped glands called trichomes. They are what make good bud look frosty, and they are where most of the plant’s THC and terpenes are made. When dried flower is handled, shaken or ground, many of these trichome heads break off as a fine powder. That powder is kief. The word comes from Arabic and has been used for centuries in North Africa and the Middle East, where sifting dried plants over fine cloth or screens is the traditional first step in making hash.
Because kief is mostly trichomes and very little plant matter, it is much stronger than the flower it came from. The colour gives you a rough idea of quality: pale, blonde or golden kief usually has fewer leaf and plant bits in it, while greener kief contains more plant material and tends to be weaker and harsher.
Kief terpenes and flavour
Trichomes are where cannabis makes its terpenes as well as its cannabinoids, so kief carries the smell and taste of the strain it came from, often more intensely than the flower itself. Girl Scout Cookies kief tends to smell sweet and earthy, for example, while kief from a gassy kush strain smells of fuel and pine. That is why single-strain kief is worth choosing deliberately: sprinkling kief from a strain you like on top of a different flower changes the flavour of the bowl, not just its strength. Terpenes are delicate, though, and fade with heat, light and air, which is one more reason to store kief carefully.
Is kief stronger than bud?
Yes. Good flower is often around 18% to 28% THC, while kief is commonly reported at 40% to 60% or more. The exact number depends on how carefully it was sifted and how much plant matter got through. That is why a small pinch of kief on top of a bowl can make a big difference, and why a bowl of pure kief is a lot more than most people need.
Can you get high from kief alone?
Yes, if you heat it. Like flower, kief contains mostly THCA, which turns into THC when you smoke or vaporise it. Smoking kief on its own works, but it burns fast and hot and can fall through a pipe screen, so most people mix it with flower. To use kief in edibles, you need to decarboxylate it (gently heat it) first.
What is kief called at a dispensary?
Most shops call it kief or dry sift. You will sometimes hear it called “pollen”, especially when it has been pressed, but that is a nickname: real cannabis pollen comes from male plants and has very little THC. Higher-end kief made with fine screens may be sold as premium or blonde kief.
Kief vs hash vs dry sift
- Kief is the loose, unpressed powder of trichomes.
- Dry sift is kief made deliberately and carefully, by rubbing dried flower over a series of fine screens to separate out cleaner trichome heads. It is usually purer than grinder kief.
- Hash is kief (or other trichome material, such as ice-water extract) pressed into a solid, so it burns slower, keeps longer and is easier to handle.
Solvent extracts such as wax, shatter and budder are stronger again and are usually dabbed. For more on those, read our guide to marijuana wax.
How to use kief
Sprinkle it on a bowl
The simplest option. Pack a bowl of flower, then sprinkle a small pinch of kief on top. Light the edge so the flame catches the flower first and the kief melts into it, rather than blasting the kief directly.
Roll it into a joint
Spread a thin line of kief down the middle of the flower before you roll, so it is surrounded by bud. Some people twist a little kief into the outside of the joint, but a lot of it can fall off or burn unevenly that way.
Press it into hash
Kief is the raw material for traditional hash. Applying heat and pressure, even just with parchment paper and warm hands or a press, turns loose kief into a solid piece that burns slower and more evenly.
Make moon rocks
Moon rocks are buds coated in oil and rolled in kief. They are very strong and are usually smoked in small pieces mixed with regular flower.
Cook with it
Decarboxylated kief can be added to butter or oil for homemade edibles. Because it is concentrated, a little goes a long way; start with small amounts and label anything you make.
How to collect your own kief
A three-chamber grinder has a fine mesh screen above a bottom catch. Every time you grind flower, some trichomes fall through and collect at the bottom. Over a few weeks you will build up a small stash. Scrape it out with the little tool that comes with most grinders. Putting the grinder in the freezer for a few minutes before tapping it can help more trichomes break off and fall through.
Do not expect much: a grinder collects only a small fraction of the flower’s weight, so it usually takes a good amount of bud to build up a gram. Dedicated sift boxes and screen sets collect more, and finer screens give cleaner, blonder kief at the cost of a smaller yield.
Kief we carry, compared
We sell AAA+ blonde kief in single-strain versions, so you can match the kief to your flower or try a strain in a new way. At the time of writing:
| Product | Strain notes | Grade | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kief: Girl Scout Cookies | Sweet, earthy cookies-family strain | AAA+ blonde | Adding strength to evening bowls |
| Kief: Thin Mint Cookies | A dessert-style member of the Cookies family | AAA+ blonde | Topping evening bowls and joints |
| Kief: Rockstar | A strong indica well known on Canada’s West Coast | AAA+ blonde | Heavier, end-of-day sessions |
Thin Mint Cookies and Sunset Sherbet kief are also available in our kief section. Quality can change slightly from batch to batch, so try a small amount before buying more.
Similar products we carry: hash
If you like kief but want something slower-burning and easier to handle, hash is the natural next step. Our hash section includes traditional styles such as Mazar Sharif Afghan hash, an indica hash from Northern Afghanistan, as well as a range of house and imported hash.
How to store kief
Keep kief in a small airtight glass jar in a cool, dark place. Light and heat break down THC and terpenes, and air dries out the flavour. Avoid plastic bags, since kief sticks to plastic and you will lose some every time you open it. If you have a lot, pressing some into hash is a practical way to keep it longer.
Ordering kief by mail
Leafville ships across Canada by Canada Post with tracking. Orders are vacuum sealed and sent in plain packaging, and you pay by Interac e-Transfer. We sell only to adults of legal age in their province.
FAQ
Can you get high just from kief?
Yes, once it is heated. Kief is much stronger than flower, so a small amount goes a long way. Most people mix it with flower rather than smoking it alone.
What does kief actually do?
It adds more THC and terpenes to whatever you smoke, so a bowl or joint with kief is noticeably stronger and often more flavourful than flower alone.
What is kief called at a dispensary?
Usually kief or dry sift. It is sometimes called “pollen”, but it is not actually pollen.
Is kief stronger than bud?
Yes. Kief is commonly reported at about 40% to 60% THC or more, compared with roughly 18% to 28% for good flower.
How long does kief last?
Stored airtight in a cool, dark place, kief keeps its strength for months. It slowly loses flavour and potency if left exposed to air, light or heat.
Is kief the same as hash?
No. Kief is the loose powder; hash is trichome material pressed into a solid. Hash usually burns slower and keeps longer.
